On June 8, 2007 at 10:36 a.m. Deputy Chief 5-10A was returning to New Jersey via the Del. Mem. Br. when he saw a column of smoke in the area of Kent Ave. After arriving at a new 5 story retirement building under construction, it was apparent that a large roof fire was the cause of the smoke. A fire ignited while hot tar was being poured on the new roof. Chief 5-10A radioed his findings to Salem County Communications, to which they responded they were in the process of dispatching units after receiving several 911 calls. Chief 5-10A directed Engine 7-1 to lay in from a hydrant on Kent Ave. and set up to supply Quint 5-6. Due to the roof being constructed of concrete, damage was limited and it was reported that the fire would not delay the opening of the building. Command was transferred to Deepwater Fire Co. as the fire was in their district. Other units on scene included Ladder 6, Engine 11, FAST 12, Rescue 5, and Engine 7-2.
